Dave Hoelzle
Dave was a member of the Alleyne Research Group and the Applied Biomaterials and Biomechanics Lab (advised by Prof. Wagoner Johnson) from 2005 to 2011. He received his Masters degree in 2007 and PhD in 2011. His PhD research focused on the manufacture of artificial bone scaffolds, with the primary contribution of his thesis being a reorientation of the standard ILC algorithm to make it more amenable to flexible additive manufacturing systems. Dave began a post-doctoral research appointment at the University of California, Los Angeles in August of 2011 investigating devices for high-throughput detection of cell mechanics under the advisement of Prof. Amy Rowat. He will be joining the faculty of the Dept. of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame in Fall of 2012.
Rich Otten
Richard Otten attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Alleyne Research Group from August 2008 to August 2010. For his masters research, Rich developed and evaluated of control strategies for air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. His research made contributions to the efficiency and reliability of these systems which has made important impacts on the development of future systems. His work also led to the development of an alternate testing environment which reduces development costs while increasing testing flexibility. After graduation, he accepted a position at Sandia National Laboratory within the systems engineering group.
Tom McKinley
Tom McKinley was an ARG member from July 2006 to December 2009. His doctoral research was on model predictive control of diesel engine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. Tom also developed dynamic models of secondary cooling systems and novel switched heat exchanger models for vapor compression cycles, which were implemented into the THERMOSYS Toolbox for MATLAB/SIMULINK. After graduation, he accepted a position within the automotive industry as a Six Sigma Blackbelt, and has since been certified as an Associate Systems Engineering Professional.
